Tasty Tuesday Week 3

Week 3 Tasty Tuesday was root veggies.  Kids got to try potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, kohlrabi, turnips, carrots, radishes, and onions.  Again we tried everything raw and cooked (we didn't cook the radishes).  Potatoes and sweet potatoes were a hit, along with carrots, but beets, kohlrabi, and radishes were not.  We used the root veggies to make a meat pocket for lunch.  To cooked hamburger and shredded cheese, each person got to add the veggies they liked and then put their filling in a square of croissant dough.  Most were surprised that they liked it even if a stray veggie from their dislike list made it into their pocket.

Noah Week

During week 3 we studied Noah's Ark.  We did many projects with rainbows.  We colored rainbows, made a rainbow collage, made a person rainbow by having the littles all where a color of the rainbow, and of course we ate rainbow snacks.  We also, reenacted the flooding of earth with the garden hose and a container of dirt and people.  It was strange to talk to the little ones about everything dying under the water but they didn't seem to mind, unlike the big kids who thought it was creepy to watch.  Then to sum up Noah week we made a book that tells the story of Noah.

Week 3 Fun Friday Project

Week 1 Videos

We began a new element that we are using as an assessment and as a "week in the life" review for each child.  Every Friday Ellana, Keirstyn, Alex, Natalie, and Joshua will recap their week on camera.  We hope they will highlight their favorite things of the week, the concepts we wanted them to learn, a new or favorite song, the book they created, and for the older two their creative writing.  This first week's videos are a little rough and forced but they will get better.  I hope I get the videos embedded right so you can watch your favorite child, or all five.

It has taken awhile to figure out how to do the videos, so it is the end of week 4 and we are just now posting week 1 videos.  So hopefully soon you will get to see all 4 weeks videos.

Homeschool Co-op

Each year in the fall and spring area homeschool families get together in a school-like setting.  Moms teach classrooms full of kids grouped by similar age levels.  Every Thursday for 10 weeks in the fall and spring, Debbie and Sarah teach classes for high schoolers and Josh, Natalie, Alex, Keirstyn, and Ellana take classes all day.  There are 80+ families involved, with over 200 kids nursery age through high school.  It is an awesome experience for everyone involved.

Here is our breakdown of classes for interested persons.  Debbie teaches Literary Analysis, Physical Science, and Western Civilization.  Sarah helps with Physical Science and teaches Geometry of Wholemovement, a high school Geometry enrichment class.  Ellana is taking Biology, Western Civ, British Lit, and Geometry.  Keirstyn and Alex take Astronomy together in the morning.  Keirstyn then take gym, cooking, and American Girl, a study of New Orleans in the late 1800s.  Alex is taking American Heros, gym, and Presidents and Government.  Natalie is in Pre-Kindergarten and Josh is in Preschool where they do typical preschool activities, music class, and gym time. It is a full, busy day for everyone but everyone leaves happy with many things to share.

The first few weeks there were scary for Alex but by week 3 he worked through his fears and had a great time, too.  The weather has been great, too, so we have been enjoying picnic lunches in the sunshine.
